The Aldbourne Youth Council website is currently being constucted by Tom Rendell, AYC webmaster! If you would like to help Tom develop this site, please come to the AYC meetings held on Tuesdays 7pm onwards!  In the meantime, information is held on this site until completion.

About Aldbourne Youth Council:

All young people both elected and non elected are welcome to attend meetings which are the first Tuesday of every month at Aldbourne CAN either regularly or occasionally to share their views about village life, plan activities and outings with support from Trustees and Amy, AYC Youth Worker.   In addition to the monthly meetings, Amy is available Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings 6-9pm at the CAN and other volunteer Youth Workers are present at various other times.  The CAN Post Box is located outside the CAN so any messages can be left there for youth workers and Trustees to pick up and act upon.  2010/11 Trustee details click here.

AYC offers young people a recognised official voice within the community of Aldbourne and is very highly thought of at Wiltshire Council level for the good work that has already been achieved and continues to be done.
Young people who want to get more involved with village life and make a difference for themselves and others have the opportunity to access support through the Youth Council or other young members to explore their own ideas and plans either independently or part of a group and make their own decisions, learning important life skills along the way.

In the case of the BMX project, young people really did 'Xperience the dream' for themselves but little did they know that by doing so and going on to form the Aldbourne Youth Council this enabled Young People today and in the future an officially recognised voice within the community at Parish Council level.  The Youth Council Constitution empowers young people to champion their own and others cause from a young persons viewpoint with support from Adult Trustees.  Prospective Trustees willing to support the Young People put their names forward at the AGM and are elected by the Young People themselves!

The Parish Council have recognised the importance of listening to young people in Aldbourne and have allocated the Youth Council an official 5 minute slot at the monthly Parish Council meetings to enable young people to present their views and report on what they have been doing as part of the Youth Council. This is one way of meeting the 'UN Convention on the Rights of the Child' which came into force in the UK on 15th January 1992.  e.g. the right to be heard.  Adults and Governments now have a legal responsiblity to work together to ensure that children and young people from 8-18 receive their rights.

AYC is a registered charity, VAT registered and governed by a constitution that was written by the young people themselves back in 2006 with support from Community First and adult trustees at that time.  The charity is also affiliated to Youth Action Wiltshire by way of an annual membership fee so young people in Aldbourne can also access the activities and events that are organised by them. www.youthactionwiltshire.org  (Please book activites via the Aldbourne Youth Council Youth Workers/Amy.)

Important notice:

Young people who have chosen to make a difference by association or membership of the Youth Council should not as a result be used as a 'label' for adults to cast blame for anti-social behaviours of others or as a 'magic wand' or 'big stick' to solve such problems.  It should be remembered that all of us at some point or another, whatever age will overstep acceptable boundaries and rules in life. This is normal and we all make mistakes which we continue to learn from.
Being part of or associated with the Aldbourne Youth Council should NOT mean young members are expected to behave any differently in the community than any other young person.  Young people are individuals and until the age of 18, are parents/legal guardians responsibility and not the club or organisation to which they may or may not belong.  Outside meeting time or organised activities, young people are not necessarily representing the AYC so please do try and encourage adults to inform parents if there are any concerns about children and young peoples activities within the community as parents cannot fix what they do not know about!

Want to know more?

If you are a young person or perhaps an adult 18+ who is interested in becoming a trustee you are very welcome to come along to meetings at any time or chat to current trustees to find out more.  If you would like to receive regular updates on activities, please use the CONTACT US page with your details or via the Aldbourne CAN.

Previous projects completed 2006-2009:

Aldbourne BMX track and youth shelter, Alternative Sports day village event, Aldbourne Internet Cafe, various fundraising events e.g. Wantage Silver Youth Band on the green.
These projects had to be researched, some had business plans created and presented to grant providers, Parish Council permission obtained, village support campaigned for and consultations/questionaires, grant applications written and submitted plus much more.  All by the young people themselves with the support of adult trustees.  They have their own chair and secretary, adult trustees powers are very limited and are basically to ensure activities and projects are legal and there is enough money in the AYC bank account to pay for it and of course inspire the young members to rise to a challenge or two!
Previous community projects: Assist Aldbourne community volunteers group regularly with keeping the village tidy, hedge planting, bird boxes, bark laying.  The BMX track also continues to be maintained by the young people themselves.  Volunteers to help with this task very welcome! (Please speak to Amy or trustees)
Aldbourne Youth Council also have a projector available available to borrow in return for a small donation towards wear and tear.
Previous support given to others: Talks and presentations to other youth groups wanting to set up their own youth council; Pewsey, Rowde.  Presentations to other Parish Councils, Community area Board, Community First.  Visits from West Lavington Youth Club, Marlborough Town Council and Devizes Police to see how the youth council works and the BMX project was completed.  The young people themselves have created powerpoint presentations and delivered those presentations to the organisations listed and more!
